Typical sprint weekend structure
Friday usually features one practice session instead of three. Sprint qualifying (often called sprint shootout) follows, setting the grid for the sprint race.
Saturday hosts the sprint — a flat-out race to roughly one third of Grand Prix distance — then Grand Prix qualifying later in the day to set Sunday's grid.
Sunday's race distance, points scale and tyre rules match a normal Grand Prix.
- Friday: FP1 + sprint qualifying
- Saturday: Sprint race + Grand Prix qualifying
- Sunday: Grand Prix
Sprint points
Points are awarded to the top eight finishers in the sprint on a reduced scale (currently eight for first down to one for eighth — confirm in sporting regulations for the season you are following).
Fastest lap in the sprint does not carry the same bonus as the Grand Prix unless regulations specify otherwise for that year.
Both drivers' sprint points count toward the constructors' championship.
Strategy and setup differences
Teams run lower downforce for the sprint if they prioritise overtaking, or maximise one-lap pace for qualifying sessions. Parc fermé rules still apply once the relevant qualifying segment begins.
Damage or power unit stress in the sprint can affect Sunday grid penalties or spare parts usage — another reason sprint results matter beyond the small points pool.
Frequently asked questions
- Does sprint qualifying set the Sunday grid?
- No. Sprint qualifying sets the sprint grid only. Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday sets the grid for Sunday's race.
- How long is an F1 sprint race?
- The sprint is run to 100 km at each circuit (lap count varies). It is much shorter than Sunday's Grand Prix, which targets about 305 km.
