Race weekend

How long does an F1 race last?

A Formula 1 Grand Prix is not timed like a football match — it runs to a target distance just over 305 kilometres (260 km at Monaco), converted to a lap count for each circuit, with a maximum two-hour clock.

Race distance

The lap count is chosen so that the race distance exceeds 305 km (Monaco excepted). High-speed tracks need fewer laps; tight circuits need more.

Two-hour limit

If the race hits two hours of elapsed time (extendable in some red-flag scenarios), it ends at the end of the lap when the limit is reached. Long suspensions can make this relevant in wet races.

Classification and half points

Drivers must complete 90% of the winner's distance to be classified unless regulations specify otherwise. Less than 75% distance completed by all cars can trigger half points.
